September 2- 5

Short Week

I hope that everyone enjoyed their long weekend. School is already off to a running start!  Here is a look at our Fourth Grader's week ahead...

In Reading this week, students will learn the value of a proper book discussion.  Soon, we will divide students into small groups to study a small book more closely.  To do this, students will be participating in something known as Literature Circles.  This week, we will complete each Literature Circle Job as a class with a whole group read aloud to demonstrate to students what we will be looking for when they study their small group books.  With each "job", students will be asked to take a deeper look at the text.

In Grammar, students will be working on identifying and punctuating the 4 sentence types; declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative.  This may be a review, but in fourth grade, we still see punctuation as an issue.   In Writer's Workshop, students will continue to get to know themselves as writer's.  We are already amazed at the ability of some of our students!  We will work on two strategies this week.  One strategy is "History of a Name".  In this strategy, we will read aloud a picture about about a child and how she feels about her LONG name.  We will then ask students to write about their names.  Maybe you have a story to tell your child about their first or middle name, or maybe the heritage of their last name.  Maybe you have a nickname that your family calls your child.  If you do, please share this information with them!  You don't need to tell them it is for "Writing", just bring it up in conversation.  Hopefully this will prompt a great Writer's Workshop on Wednesday!  Students will also be introduced to the writing strategy of "Writing from a List".  This helps them sort through their thoughts, and decide what would be fun to write about.

In math last week we discussed place value and its importance in multi-digit numbers. We use place value drawings and different forms (expanded, word, and standard) to show our understanding of place value. This week we are continuing looking at place value but will focus on rounding using this understanding. We will also continue with the different number forms and comparing those numbers.
When your student has homework, they will be told to bring home their entire math notebook. We ask them to do this so that they have a resource if they struggle with something or forgot how to complete one section. In the notebooks you will see there are 5 domains that have different focuses in each one. We will sort our class work and homework into the appropriate sections. When they complete homework and it is graded, we will hand it back and they will return it to the correct domain in their notebook.

In Social Studies this week we will continue our discussion on Missouri's Geography. In this unit we are discussion the regions in Missouri and their characteristics, how we can conserve and recycle to help our state, and how latitude and longitude help us find locations on a map.

We have not yet started with our Spelling instruction. We are currently using this time to meet with the students individually to go over their academic goals for the 1st quarter. Spelling instruction will begin next week.
