Sept 18-22

Happy Monday!  we hope that you all had a relaxing weekend!  Here is a look at our week ahead:

In math, students are testing over unit one (place value) and starting work on multiplication.  There are links to help with multiplication on the left hand side of this BLOG.

In reading, we will finish up work with literature circles and finish reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.  We have used this book to help us learn about characterization, character traits, and review story elements.

In spelling, we have a new list and we are working on more multi-sensory ways to learn our words.  Remember to practice the rule at home!  The list and rule are to the right side of the BLOG.

Science this week takes a deeper look at certain forms of energy.  There is no test this unit, but there will be a few assignments to check for understanding.

In writing this week, we will finish up our work on our grandparent's day project, and then begin working on expository writing.

As a reminder, progress notes will be sent home with your child today.  Please sign and return those by Wednesday.  Your child should be at 50% of their AR goal as of this week.  Students not to 50% we use their working lunch to read until they get there.  The end of the quarter is October 17!  Please help us make sure they are working on reading at home, as well!

September 11- 15

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

This week  started off with a look back at our countries history and a moment of silence to honor  9-11. We also had a fabulous book brought in that shared a wonderful story about a hero that helped save others on this tragic day. The students seemed to learn a lot!

In math this week we are going to be working on addition and subtraction as well as looking at word problems. In reading we are continuing to look at literature circle jobs, character traits, conflicts, etc. We are doing these things while reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.  In writing we are looking at paragraphs. We are looking at what proper paragraph format looks like and they are going to be focusing on what makes grandparents important. We also started science this week and are looking at motion and energy as well as scientific method. We started today with a pretty cool experiment that you should ask your child about!

Don't forget Wednesday, September 13 is Picture Day. Send your student ready to go. We usually go first thing in the morning to ensure they are done before specials at 9:35. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your students teacher.

Our PBS skill this week is Be Respectful to the Speaker.

Sincerely,
4th Grade Team

August 28- Sept 1

It is homecoming week!  This week we will demonstrate our school pride by dressing up each day.
Monday: Hat day
Tuesday: Dress like your favorite teacher
Wednesday: Pajama Day
Thursday: Rockstar Day
Friday: Dragon Pride- red and green

On Friday, we will be busing students to the parade.  Those not participating in the parade will be able to enjoy the parade from the sidelines and retrieve candy for home and our classes.  We hope to see you there!

This week's studies include:

Math: We will continue to work on place value, ordering and comparing numbers, and a review of all on Friday.

Spelling: We have our first spelling test this week!  We will test on Friday morning!  Check your child's folder for the list.

Social Studies: This week, we are learning about Missouri's geography and symbols.  There will be a geography test next Friday, and a fact test next Thursday.  Your child has a study packet they are asked to bring back and forth from school to home to be working on these skills.

Writing:  We are still developing our student's writing stamina and their writer's notebooks.  We are helping them find the many things that they have to write about.

Reading: This week, we are pushing students to work on their discussion skills with their peers.  We are trying to lead them in to peer led discussions about the books we read in class, and how to think deeper about what we read.  Please remember to have your child read a bit each night of their own books.  Maybe try having a conversation with them about what they have read!

Our PBS skill this week is to follow the Golden Rule and what that looks like in our classrooms.

August 22-25

Welcome back!  We hope that all are enjoying a smooth transition into the new school year.  Our blog posts will usually be on the first day the school week..it just took us a day to remember!  The Eclipse had us all excited, and we heard about some great learning experiences.  So here is our week at a glance!

This week in math, we will be using the time in class to get to know where our students are at in the area of place value.  We will begin lessons on Friday.

In writing, we will be setting up our writer's notebooks, and working on launching them.

In reading, we are working on determining your child's reading level, and finding out who they are as readers.

Social Studies this week involves a closer look at our Dragon Pledge and the Pledge of Allegiance that we recite every morning.  We hope that students use this time to really keep in mind what the words they are saying each day mean.

We don't have a spelling list this week, but keep a look out for the words weekly on the right hand margin of this blog.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns with any policies that we have.

As a reminder, please make any transportation changes in the office before 2:30.  Thank you in advance.

May 15-19

Hooray for the last week of school!  As much as we have enjoyed your children, I think we are all ready for a summer break!  This week is jam packed with activities, so here goes nothing!

Monday: Today we will start our day with Fractured Fairy Tale Plays, continue with our Metric Olympic games, and then head to lunch.  After lunch, those who doubled their AR points for the year will be heading off to their field trip!  I will say, fourth grade has an amazing showing!  What great readers we have!  Those remaining will be conducting STEM projects that go along with our fairy tales.

Tuesday:  We will start the day with Fractured Fairy Tale presentations again, then move on to Science Fair touch ups.  For lunch, we will have our students who tripled their AR points eating their pizza reward in the classroom.  Students will then be rewarded with watching an AR movie and receiving their treats.

Wednesday:  Again, we will start with Fractured Fairy Tales and this will wrap those presentations up.  We will then present awards for the Metric Olympic winners.  The rest of the day, we will focus on Science Fair and presentations.  At 1:30, we begin setting up, and then from 1:45 to 2:30, parents are welcome to join us at the Science Fair in the Multi-purpose room.

Thursday: This is Field Day!  The morning will be cleaning out the rooms, and watching a upper elementary movie.  After lunch, students will head outside (weather permitting) to participate in the games.

Friday: This is our last day!  We will start with students in the assembly around 8:30 to receive any awards they have earned.  We will then move onto the Talent Show.  After this, we will have a sack lunch in the classroom, and will dismiss at 12.  If you are taking your child after the assembly, please remember to sign them out of the office.

Other reminders, if you have library books out or that are lost, they need to be returned or paid for as soon as possible.  Please pay any lunch balances this week, as well.  Grade cards will be sent home on Friday to those who have $0 account balances and that are present at school.

Thank you for sharing your children with us this year!  We will miss them!  Happy SUMMER!

May 8- May 12

Dear fourth grade families,
We are beginning the last full week of fourth grade. Can you believe how fast this year has flown? This week we will have our final spelling list week 28. We will be doing our final cursive assignment and spelling test this week as well. Please help your student study as this will be their final 3 spelling grades.
In math we are working through Metric Olympics. As a fourth grade they have been split into 10 teams and they have each selected a country to represent. Today they designed a symmetrical flag using two-dimensional shapes and tomorrow we will begin our events. in science they are continuing science fair. We will be putting the finishing touches on our boards and binders to get ready to attend the science fair next Wednesday.
In reading we just completed our final class read of the school year with Sarah Plain and Tall and did a comparison of the book and movie. Most of the fourth graders have already crushed their AR goals most of them doubling if not tripling. We are so proud of them! If  your child has a goal that they must meet or an additional one that they have set for themselves Friday is the cut off for fourth grade. Please help encourage them to get there!
**** Reminder:All Library books are due Friday May 12, 2017! If you have any questions or concerns please contact your students teacher. Have a great last full week and we will touch base with you for the last 4 1/2 days next week. Thank you for a great year!
Sincerely,
Fourth grade teachers
