April 24- 28

Happy Monday!  Isn't this weather gorgeous!?  This is a good sign that summer is right around the corner.  Things are coming to close here, but we are still working away at making this school year successful.  Here is a look at our week ahead:

In Science, we will continue to work on our Science Fair projects here at school.   No worries, everything is completed here.  You are able to come see their hard work on May 17 from 1:45- 2:30.

In Math, we will continue our work with geometry and measuring lines and angles, and solving problems involving these.  We are preparing for our MAP test in this area on Monday, May 1 and Tuesday, May 2.

In Writing, students are working on a mock-scrap book about their school year.  They are having so much fun remembering the year!

In Reading, we are reading Sarah, Plain and Tall as a class, working on main idea, theme and connections.

We have our last true spelling list with rule this week.  Let's end with a bang!

Please remember to return your child's field trip permission slip with money by Tuesday, April 25.

Have a great week!  Only 4 more weeks!

April 18-21

Welcome Back!
We hope you had a refreshing break! We will be kicking off MAP testing first thing Tuesday morning with ELA testing at 8:30. Please make sure that your student gets plenty of sleep the night before and that they have a hearty breakfast to give them energy and brain power to persevere. It is also important that your student be on time that day as well as Wednesday. We will also be switching specials times with the first classes for those two days. So, they will get there specials on Tuesday and Wednesday at 12:45.
In math we are finishing up geometry and data. Then, in science we are looking at our science fair projects and putting them together. This is an at school project and will be done in the classrooms with all supplies provided. The students usually have a great time conducting their experiments! In reading we will be beginning our new class book Sarah Plain and Tall. Finally, there will be no spelling this week as we would like our students to focus solely on the MAP.
I can't believe we have only 23 1/2 days left of fourth grade. Once MAP is over we will be sure to have some fun to end our year. There will be more to come on those events later. Thank you again for all you do for our students all year long and if you have any questions or concerns please contact your students' teacher!
Sincerely,
Fourth Grade Team

April 10-12

What an exciting week!!!

We're so ready and excited for the 4th Grade Famous Missourian Wax Museum! The kids have been working so hard and they're ready to show everyone what they know!

The Wax Museum will take place in the High School gym this year from 9:30-10:30. If you need to help your child set up, please plan on being at the school around 8:40. This is when we will begin preparing and moving our things down to the gym. At 10:30, if you are at the wax museum, you may help your child change, clean up, and take anything home that you can. We ask that you don't house any of the wax museum props, stands, etc. in our rooms overnight. If you need to pick it up at the end of the day, that is fine as well!

We will not have a new spelling list this week since it is a short week.

In reading this week, we will continue to do MAP test preparation and vocabulary work. Please remember that we begin MAP testing April 18th, our first day back from Easter Break. We will test first thing in the morning so please try to have your child here on time. We've sent home several MAP testing tips for supporting them at home. We ask that they get a good night's rest and a good breakfast each morning. They will get a small snack right before testing here and some gum/candy to munch on during testing.

In math this week, we will begin our geometry unit. We will study points lines and rays this week and continue our geometry unit further next week.

In science this week, we will begin working on our science fair projects. Science fair is set for May 17th. We will send more information home about it when it is closer. All the work for our science fair projects will be done at school!

Reminder:

No school this Thursday, Friday, Monday
1/2 AR Goal is due this Wednesday, April 12
All AR Points due May 12

Have a great week and safe break!

April 3-7

Happy Monday!  If there is any truth in the saying, "April showers bring May flowers!" we should have LOTS of beautiful flowers!

This week in whole group reading, we will be using this week to prepare for the MAP test by reviewing testing vocabulary and reviewing some testing tips to help ease their stress level.  We begin testing on the Tuesday after our Easter break.

In Writing, we will continue to plug away with our Famous Missourians.  The students seem to be making great progress with their projects and we are excited to see the final outcome on April 11.  If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask.  It is right around the corner!

In Math, students will finish up their studies on customary measurement.  We will test over this on Friday.

In Social Studies, we will finish up our chapter on growth in Missouri now discussing reconstruction and moving into inventions.  We will test on Friday.

Have a great week!

March 27-31

Dear Fourth Grade Families,
This week is a busy one. We are working on our Famous Missourians during writing. We are focusing on typing our final draft materials and editing to make sure we are on track to meet due dates. We also sent home a checklist to see where the at home pieces of the projects are at in the completion process as well. We are just wanting to check in to make sure that everyone is on track and going to be able to finish in time. If you have questions about the project please contact your students teacher as soon as possible.

In reading this week we are looking at following directions activities. We are trying to get across the importance of reading all instructions before completing a task or giving an answer. This will help them in preparing for the MAP test. In Social Studies we are studying the Civil War. We are looking at what lead up to the war, why it took place, and what Missouri's special place is in it all. If you are curious make sure to ask your student what they may have to share.

Math is still in measurement. We are looking at the customary measures and comparing them to the metric measures. It is making it difficult that we are no longer just moving a decimal point, but we are having to use a chart to remind us things like how many ounces are in a pound? How many feet are in a mile? How many cups are in a gallon? This is always a system that throws them for a loop, but we are going to continue working through it!

*Reminder two papers that need returned The Famous Missourians Checklist due Friday 3/31. & The Nurse Note that each child received about the talks that will take place next week due Wednesday 4/5

As always if you have any questions or concerns please contact your child's teacher.
Sincerely,
4th grade teachers

March 20-24

**It's hard to believe we're officially into the 4th quarter! We were SO proud of the 4th grade 3rd quarter because ALL of them reached their AR goals. We've NEVER had that happen and were so excited to celebrate with them last week. Not only did they get their points on time, but they got them a week early!!! We challenged them to do the same this quarter and hope they can do it!

**Grade cards will come home tonight, please sign and return those as soon as possible.

This week in math we will wrap up our metric measurement unit with a test on Monday (Kountz's class took the test Friday). We will then move on to measuring using the customary system.

In reading this week, we will finish Little House in the Big Woods. We will continue working on summarizing each chapter as we read. Then we will create a magazine cover that will summarize the ENTIRE book. We have focused a lot on summarizing for this book and are excited to end it with such a fun project!

In writing, we will begin to draft our scripts for the Famous Missourian Wax Museum project. Students have been working hard to research and take notes on their Missourian. We will begin organizing those notes in an outline and eventually a first draft that will be due on Friday.

This week we will use a couple days to introduce science fair and put them into their groups. Groups will choose their projects, but we will not start them for a couple weeks. We wanted to group and choose ideas so that we have time to get the needed materials for projects.

After the two days of introducing science fair, we will move on to our final Social Studies unit. This unit will focus on the growth of Missouri and the era near the civil war and slavery.

In spelling, this week will be a review week, so there is no new rule. Test will be Friday as always!

March 13- 17

Happy Monday!  We hope that you had a wonderful weekend.  Although the temperatures are cooler now, at least we missed the snow!

Here is a look at our week ahead:

In reading, we will continue reading Little House in the Big Woods.  We will work on summarizing the text.

In writing, students will continue their research on their Famous Missourian.  Please make sure that you are thinking ahead for our April 11 presentation date, and if there are any items that you may need help getting for your child's costume or presentation.  This week, students are required to have their timeline items completed (at least 5), and their two sources properly cited.

Math this week continues work on metric measurement and then we move on to customary measurement.  We will have a test on either Friday or Monday.

In Social Studies, we will wrap up our unit on Missouri becoming a state, and test over this on Friday.

AR points are due by Friday, although EVERY FOURTH GRADE STUDENT HAS 100% OF THEIR GOAL ALREADY!  At this point, we are allowing students to double and triple to earn extra rewards.  We are so proud of all the students and their hard work this quarter.
